The Black/White Double Standard

beyonce ga hq 3

Last week we asked: Are new year resolutions really necessary? From the results, you answered: No.

Yesterday, a picture of beyonce covering GQ magazine  was ‘leaked’ on the internet and alot of people ‘aahed’ and ‘oohhed’ over the picture. Many thought she was still sooo hot even after having a baby. Linda Ikeji, a popular blogger went as far as getting Rihanna’s cover issue and asking her readers to compare both of them in terms of hotness.

Many readers commented, choosing their favorite and all and I couldnt help buy imagine the kind of comments that would have resulted  if perhaps Sheyi Shay and Tiwa Savage were the ones covering these magazines. I’m too sure most people won’t comment on their “hotness” but rather dwell on the fact that they were scantily dressed. Some people might even go as far as saying they have daddy issues, poor upbringing or their placenta was eaten by a dog hence their ‘ashewo’ tendencies (-__-).

*Sigh* Nigerians.

Today’s poll will be on double standards. Why is it okay for foreigners/foreign celebs to dress scantily and go scot free but Nigerians get called prostitutes? Is it some sort of inferiority complex from Nigerians? Is it just the fact that Nigerians have no love for themselves hence the harsh, judgemental words? Well that’s my opinion though on this particular double standard.

Lets hear from you…

Yes, double standards exist, which I believe are forced more on women than on men.

  2. first says:

It has nothing to do with double standards. It’s more of a cultural thing and what is acceptable in various settings.

      i agree

really ?? , what is it if it isn't double standards, do we have a diff culture when ogling Bey's bod from when judging Tonto's tattoos ????…….. so its acceptable to do one and not the other, …….while retaining our culture ???

abegiiii, double standard na double standard…….

  3. miss A says:

what you do is good for you and i wont judge you but try to bring it to me and all hell is let lose.
    albeit dishonestly.

  4. bii says:

Easy! We r jus too religious n grossly pretentious therefore when in rome…

  5. lily says:

Double standard of the highest order. We nigerian's can so hate our own but love dem foreign celebs. Actually its dat bad favoritism is shown even amongst our own celebrities. Our culture does not allow for women flaunting their bodies dey claim, but same pple smoke nd go half naked when going clubbing mshew.

  6. ladetawak says:

    Nigerians are pretentious people.

culture is no excuse because in the days of old, women (and men) were mostly naked.

  7. nijezie says:

It's more of a cultural thing. It's accepted in the western culture bu it ain't cool here. You gotta live with that.

  8. chuka says:

Unfortunately it simply has nothing to do with double standards. This is Africa; Nigeria…here everything is interpreted through interjected socio- cultural prisms…from ideologies, views to innanities as dressing.

    C-U-L-T-U-R-E…#CULTURE!

The more you pay attention, to people's decisions and their rationale for making them, that people, Nigerians especially are really inconsistent. People tend to make decisions and then find an argument that suits the position they took. You see this time and again when you work through philosophical thought experiment called the trolley problem.

When it comes to things like this, there is an obvious double standard and it's so pervasive that we see in the things we pass down to our children. When I was younger, I remember my sister asking my dad if she could try out for cheerleading, to which he promptly replied, 'Wèrè ṣe wò, ṣùgbọ́n kò ṣe bí lọ́mọ.' This type of thing isn't new, but it's obviously not going away anytime soon.

Of course. Just like in marriages too. We shrug when two celebs get divorced abroad n a week after dey r wit oda pple. In 9ja,if u try it even if ur hubby is cheating on u or beating u,no one will even wanna date not to talk of marry u

  14. Tdeela says:

Double standard! Really??? If twas tiwa on the covers lyk dat, hell yeah hell wud break loose, cus dats jst how its spose to be, she is an african woman, we shudnt allow the western world completely blind us, beyonce and rihanna can do wateva bcus we all know the western world know nothing about morals, but dats not the situation in africa….we should not imbibe all of wat dey do nd forget our morality

I think we do it unconsciously because I personally I would talk if Tiwa did the same thing but Beyonce, I'm like "oh yeah"

  17. lordfiddler says:

There are double standards alright but it's not just about black and white…in my opinion, I think it's more about some sort of "our own" mentality. This is the same kinda mentality that'll let a grown man call a girl to arrange some of her friends for him and his buddies to party with, and then react with intense dismay and shock when one of the hotties that turns up happens to be his niece… I guess we usually go with that kinda thinking.

  18. Cheers! It’s appropriate time to make some plans for the future and it’s time to be happy.
