The Love Letters: Letter #2
LETTER #2: Will You Be My Val? (2/2)
From the bottom of my heart,
My bed of flowers,
My room of smiles.
PO Box: 1 L0V3 U
My Dearest Iskilu,
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the wind is blowing and I’m here, thinking about your love. What kind of love is it? Is it true love like in Lambs tales from Shakespeare or is it kele kele love because aunty Tiwa has warned us and I am not doing. LOL.
Anyway, I am sending this letter to you in my best handwriting with my scented pen and these precious pink letter pages that my cousin got for me from her excursion to Ghana that I have been waiting for a special person to write on it to just because I got your letter. (Ha! You know plenty grammar and fine English. Have you read the whole dictionary?)
I have read your letter uncountable times and I have been carrying it around in my math’s set case and I have refused to borrow anybody. Since I saw it last week, I’ve not been able to sleep well and my tummy has crawling with warm things moving inside. That’s how I was thinking about your letter in chemistry class and I went to pour base inside the burette and my solution refused to change colour. Everybody got their titre value and I was just looking like a mumu and it didn’t even disturb me. You know why? It is because I now have the titre value of your love.
You have always been a cool boy to me, but you were a popular jingo and you were always moving with them Ugonna. Senior Ngozi now said nobody will like my small breast that are just pointing out so I was very shy of boys and I was scared that you would see my jumping shimi and laugh at me.
There was one day you were sharing the classwork book in Mr Ajakaye’s class and I was looking at your sparkling white shirt and all the fine gators on your school trouser and I wanted you to ask me out but I was afraid. I used to try my best not to let our eyes jam but now I’m happy that you still noticed me. That is how true love does.
My answer is yes. Yes, I will be your Val.
I know this our love is meant to be o. Will you ask me how? My mummy just finished punishing me last month because I cut all the flowers in our backyard garden, doing “he loves me, he loves me not” till I littered the entire compound with what she says is childish playfulness. All the sweeping of the compound every morning before school was painful o, but I am happy now and I understand because you have made the flowers so beautiful in my eyes and the one I cut from our neighbor’s yard on my way from school is now hanging inside my shuku.
I wish I can drop geography and do visual art sef, so that we can be drawing the school gate and the sun in the sky together and laugh. But for now, we can see during break in my class and after closing.
I saw you walking on SS1 block yesterday, and my heart just started beating fast like I had run in the shuttle relay. I didn’t even want to get to the finish line.
I almost can’t believe sha! Did you really mean that me and you will now be walking together home after school? And your sister will really buy me perfume from France? Will you be holding my hand and making me laugh in a tiny voice without even tickling me? When we go out in the evening, will you buy all the puff puff I want and chase me on that Ogombo beach like Ramsey Noah and Genevieve? If it’s true, I’ll be the happiest girl in the world o.
I have timed the time that I dropped this letter inside your locker. Please don’t vex, I’ve not been doing shakara, shey I did not give you heart attack sha? I just wanted to give you small suspense. So that the love will cook well in your pot. I did not forget your request.
So, you will be my first Val. Me and you will do Val’s day celebration together abi? Shebi we should wear the same color of rubber band on our hand so that we’ll be like Beyonce and Jayz and 1+1 will be equals to 1 and not 2 like Mr Ajakaye taught us. I will even write your name in my lyrics book and practice the song with your name instead. Then dedicate it to you with your pet name. Maybe I will even buy you present too.
Iskilu, Skibobo, Skiski… I’ve been thinking of new pet names for you in my sleepless nights. Skilly is what is winning over my tongue now sha. Do you like it? My Skilly-Handsome. Fine boy.
I’ll meet you after closing at the back of assembly hall tomorrow afternoon .
Until then, I drop my golden pen in my basket of Love.
Chioma for life.
