NYSC: Gift Or Curse?
Last week we looked at what age kids should be sent abroad to study and according to your votes, we concluded that: kids should be sent abroad once they are above 18.

I remember the first time I saw a corper; green faded trousers, white t-shirt and bright orange shoes. I just couldn’t help laughing. I wondered if there was something wrong with the world. On a more serious note and as hard as it may be, honestly, the NYSC scheme has some advantages. The experience of diverse cultures, change of environment, possibility of meeting life partners (:|) etc. But at the end of the day, is it really WORTH it???
I’ve lost count of the things possibly wrong with the scheme. I don’t think the security issue can be over emphasised. Each time I think of those corpers that died during last year’s elections, I feel genuinely sad. That aside, the untold hardships all in the name of service to our father land together with the Government’s negligence towards corps members welfare has made the whole scheme unbearable. Should I go back to the outfit??? I think not.
‘The aim of the scheme is mainly to promote National integration and also give the youths the opportunity to learn about higher ideals of national achievements, social and cultural improvement’<—- blah blah blah. Isn’t it possible for us to do all of this out the country? Paris, Dubai or Milan would not have been a bad idea. They would have surely helped out with that hideous outfit. Bottom line though, as far as I’m concerned, I think the scheme as we currently have it, has long overstayed its welcome.
You all know the drill, what say you?

first yaaaaay!
I don’t think it should be scrapped. It should be given a total overhaul. The ‘idea’ behind the scheme is good but the implementation is appalling.
The idea is to interact with ppl with diff cultures right? Didn’t we interact with them in uni??? The pt of the scheme is lost abeg
third option made me laugh……lol
1st, the third option is hilarious … But really, I think the whole scheme has overstayed its welcome and has now become irrelevant. They should scrap the thing abeg. Govt. Officials r making money off the scheme, employers r taking corpers in for cheap labour, nd to top it all, one can’t begin to explain how annoying it is when u’r in ur ‘uniform’ and one annoying being just shouts “otondo” or “corper shun” and stuff like that! >:O !
The scheme is very irrelevant now. How do you promote national and cultural integration, when some cultures are not tolerant.
I was posted to the North for NYSC. After orientation, while trying to 'runz' redeployment, some school girls (about age 7) started throwing stones at me ……… because my t-shirt wasn't long enough. I was wearing a male BYC t-shirt o. Many people do not get out of situations like that unscathed/alive.
I was posted to a primary school; Hausa and Arabic speaking only. Only the headmaster understood english, the school proprietor did not understand English. How exactly was i supposed to impart any form of knowledge to the kids. I hightailed it out of there, paid 8500 a month to cover LGI runs(allowie was 9500) and went back for passing out.
The amount of retarded, dull and disappointing graduates you meet is very ridiculous. A 10-second conversation with them can reduce your IQ. Best if they used NYSC funds to improve education.

"…Government’s negligence towards corps members welfare has made the whole scheme unbearable". What is or who are 'corps members'? Abysmal.
The NYSC scheme has never been relevant. As it's the way with this country, we focus on trivial issues.
As it's the way with some of your criticism?Sent from my BlackBerry wireless device from MTN
I fail to see the point in your question.
Hi P.M been a min @PreyingMantis,
Yea. Been long.
Yes please.
Scrap it abeg!
And pay me the money I deserve.
Seriously….I am of the opinion that the whole NYSC thing has long overstayed its welcome. Maybe it worked in the past, but now…it isn’t working at all. The fact is that with the present state of unrest in the country people will end up working their posting or eventually redeploying. No one wants to spend 4/5/6 yrs of their adult life in university only to go and waste a whole year of your life or worse still die in one God forsaken place.
Maybe if they could come up with a scheme that better suits this century and will make actual sense, then it should be given some thought. But for now, it isn’t just working!…As for the bicycle allowance…what a joke!
wait! there's a bicycle allowance :o
Yes o!…bicycle allowance of a thousand naira!… Really!..can that even buy a spoke?!…8-I
It should be made optional.
Include that option in your poll.
No one's picking the option of 'gaining experience and earning peanuts while wearing a uniform designed by the spawn of hades' over 'Gaining experience and getting paid'
No one…
Please do not include that option in your poll…
yep, should be scrapped till the entire Nigeria is overhauled.
we now stock the secret to youth!, St. Ives Timeless Collagen cream and the fastest hair growth product, Wild Growth Hair Oil, at http://www.thestunninglady.blogspot.com
No point debating. Scrap it please.
