Phincing It
Phinc! : {finkk!} (Verb). To have a mindset that forms the sort of character that produces effective results.
I love to Pray. It never was always like this till I overheard a man I respect so much say “When we pray, we are saying that we choose to depend on God concerning that particular issue we lift before Him.” I automatically took it to mean that if I did not pray it simply meant that I did not necessarily want to depend on Him in that area for results. Whenever this crosses my mind, I shiver in fear and get to pray immediately. More importantly, as a result of this approach and my trust, I always see Him answer.
For a guy who has said quite a number of prayers, there is this one I remember so vividly. I was moving to another city to begin my first proper job in 2007 and I did not want to start out wrong so I prayed this simple prayer. “Lord, I trust that you will make me a success. However teach me what true success is. As a boy will taste salt and for the rest of his life never be confused by what salt is regardless of all the look alikes that exist, let me know what success is.” I set out and God answered this prayer in my first month at work. I have never been confused about what success is.
In my first month at work my boss said to me, “Akinlabi, the true battles we fight are in our minds. Conquer up there and you will win many battles on the outside.” At that moment I did not understand what he meant but I was in awe of the wisdom he oozed of. His insight on different topics astonished me. There sincerely was nothing you could bring up that he did not know about and could not deliver a mind-blowing lecture on. I was in awe. Hence, without his consent I labeled him MY MENTOR.
As young people, we often come across older Men and Women who seem to have something we want. They are like a current picture of things we want for ourselves in the future. In choosing them as mentors, we look at their current state and identify particular things that they possess. This ranges from the way they talk, to the way they handle business, relate with people, dress, hobbies or even the material things they own. The fact is, we can see certain results , we want them and these people are proof that it is possible.
The pre-requisite to the results that these mentors of ours currently posses is a mindset. A way that they have been conditioned to think which produces the results we see on the outside. Not all of them might be as expressive with words as mine is but they all have “a way they think”. This affects their entire decision making process, is responsible for the kind of relationships they have and the kind of achievements they record. I urge you to study the GREATS and find out what their thinking was. Be attracted by the success but importantly study the fabric of this success.
I was told a couple of weeks ago that when Aliko Dangote was asked what he would say was the thinking responsible for his success, he picked up a wooden plaque on his table and turned it to face his interviewer. On it was etched the words, “Nothing is Impossible”.
What is your mentor’s way of thinking? What is your way of thinking? As we begin to engage 2013 permit me to reiterate the words of my mentor once again …. The true battles we fight are in our minds. Conquer up there and you will win many battles on the outside.
I hope this got you to PHINC!

Definitely got me to phinc!
It indeed got me to phinc! Thanks for this.
Waoh! Thanks.
Yes! It got me to phinc
"more importantly, as a result of this approach and my trust, i always see Him answer" <—– happens exactly like this for me. I started taking prayers serious when i lost my dad, and needed comfort which wasn't man made.
On 'mentorship', i've not warmed up to the idea. Maybe when i do, i'll look for one. Thanks for this
It definitely got me to phinc. You didn’t reply my mail though sir. I anticipate your reply.
Earlier in the week,i was thinking of how to scale through my challenges and i realised that man's greatest battles are in the mind. I even updated this thought on my facebook page and i've just gotten a confirmation with this piece! More ink to your pen.
still phincing!! thanks for this.
awesome… phincing and phincing… nothing is impossible
“Lord, I trust that you will make me a success. However teach me what true success is. As a boy will taste salt and for the rest of his life never be confused by what salt is regardless of all the look alikes that exist, let me know what success is.”….this has immediately been printed and placed on my desk….my watchword from now! thank you!
